WEST 33RD CHARACTER RETENTION & INFILL
Project type
Character Retention + Multi-Family Conversion with Rear Infill Duplex
Date
2025
Location
Vancouver, BC
This multi-family residential project in Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood integrates Character retention with gentle densification. Originally constructed in 1924, the Tudor Revival character house was retained with an addition to the rear of the building. The single family house on this 66 feet wide by 125 feet deep lot was converted to 4 residential units and a new infill duplex building was added to the rear of the lot for a total of 6 units. The original house was relocated on the site to accommodate a courtyard in between the original house and the new infill building. The restored front elevation retains its distinctive steep gabled rooflines, decorative half-timbering, and diamond-patterned windows, reinforcing the architectural legacy of the block.
The new infill duplex was introduced with a bold, modern expression with a two storey massing that respects the scale of the rear yard. The architectural language contrasts the Character home with clean lines, pitched metal roofs, and contemporary materials and detailing.
