WEST 8TH RETENTION & INFILL
Project type
Two-unit Conversion (Character Retention) & Infill Development
Date
2024
Location
Vancouver, BC
Located in Vancouver’s Kitsilano on the north side of West 8th Avenue between Stephens Street and Macdonald Street, this project retains a 1922 heritage character house and adds gentle density with a rear infill home. The street facing building is conserved for its gable roof form, covered porch, and primary façade composition, with minor additions set to the rear and side to support a two-unit conversion while maintaining the original streetscape rhythm.
A new single family infill residence is introduced at the lane as a distinct but related counterpart. Its contemporary massing uses a gable roof silhouette and a restrained material palette to align with the character context, while the lane elevation is organized around a compact garage volume and upper-level living. Together, the retention and infill create three homes on one site, balancing heritage continuity with a clear, contemporary addition at the rear.
